There's only a few hours left of 2012. So how was this year?

I think that in order to plan for the coming year, I should look back at the things I did as they becoming the starting point for making plans to do better.

I studied various website hosting methods and finally found a super easy, easy template based website and hosting site, Weebly.com and created a website for the group I host, Palette Knife Painters. We already have a blog going for the group but having a website just seemed more permanent. We have some of the world's outstanding palette knife artists on the site; I am constantly wow-ed by the beautiful work. Sometimes I have to wonder, "is this really painted with the Palette Knife?" The styles are so varied and exciting. www.paletteknifepainters.org

This year, I have two new galleries to add to my resume. I am now represented by Muse& Co Fine Art Gallery in Roswell, GA. And an On-line gallery Ugallery.com. Both venues have been successful for me and I hope this will grow.

The group I belong to, Contemporary Fine Art International has developed a new website which will allow their members to sell off the website. It's in its infancy but by early next year, it will be live and I look forward to selling on that site as well.

I updated my website. www.JudyMackey.com is hosted through Fine Art Studios Online. A lot of artists use FASO for their own website and I really recommend it. For the money, you not only get a website but you get an email marketing program. I plan to use the email marketing a lot more in the coming year to reach out to my collectors and friends.

The Babe's An Angel - What do you put on the back of your paintings?

I'm having fun with these angels. The size of the canvas gave me the inspiration to get back on the angel paintings and I have had some requests for angels in pink boots since the donation for the Cancer Awareness.

What do you sign on the back of your paintings?

Recently I've bought from or traded paintings with other artists. I love the art I received but there is a second reason why I like buying from other artists as well as trade with other artists.

I like to see how the art is presented, especially if it is mailed to me. It is a learning experience for me.

Does the artist take time to make the packaging interesting? If it's not, it makes me wonder if it is because the artist knows I'm a fellow artist?

How is it packaged? Is it gift wrapped? Is there marketing materials included in the packing?

So, here is my question to you - what do you put on the back of your painting? Of course you probably sign it, title it, perhaps date it. But do you write on the back of the painting the recipient's name? A message to the recipient?

If it were me that last two questions are NO! Unless this is a gift (and even then I'd say leave that off and write a note card instead). Because artwork might be re-sold, or given to someone else. I've bought paintings from other artists to give to my friends or family - but if on the back of it - there is a "thank you - Judy" - the product becomes useless to me!

My opinion and this is just my opinion, of course, but unless the buyer specifies, "can you sign it with this -----" - don't put personal message on the back of your work.

Having a little fun with the angel idea. Victoria's secret often features beautiful ladies in lingerie and wings so this was the idea.

Are you an artist reading my blog?

Do you buy artwork by other artists? I often hear from my artists friends who are new at selling, as they try to grow their blog followers, or social media "friends" and are disappointed by the fact that most or all of their friends are other artists. I tell them that artists are also collectors. I know a lot of artists who buy other artists' works. I have several artist friends who have at least one or more of my paintings.

I've also had other artist's collectors who've found me and bought from me because of some post on "facebook" or because they saw my thumbnail on their artist's blog.

It's a start - don't worry if your followers are other artists...there's that thing about six degrees of separation and you have to continue to grow your followers and friends and it's perfectly OK to market to other artists.

You Wear It Well - PINK Boots Angel

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A few months ago I painted a few angel paintings in which the angels were sporting pink cowboy boots. The idea came from a comment left on my blog from someone who said that she was a breast cancer survior and wished to see pink cowboy boots rather than the angels I'd painted with blue or red boots. My cowboy wearing angels just looked like they had an attitude.

I have two of such angels for sale at Muse & Co Fine Art Gallery.

The third painting, pictured here is titled "You Wear It Well" - from a song I was listening to while I was painting this.

I have a friend, a breast cancer survivor, who will be walking the Susan G. Komen Walk for a Cure 3-Day. She lives in Texas. During this hot Summer she's been training for the walk by waking up at 3am in order to train without getting over heated. I am so impressed by her determination. So the least I can do is paint an angel and offer it as auction. I have decided to use Ebay since they are set up for taking auctions. I hope you will bid on the painting - the proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research.

Art Festivals - Painting of Trees in Gray

There was an Art Fest in our local city. The city did a great job organizing and closing the small historic main street areas for the tents. The weather was gorgeous - a little breezy, which made some of the exhibitors nervous as they adjusted their tents.

Have you seen the movie "Field of Dreams"? That famous line quoted by so many, "If you build it, he will come."....seeing some of the exhibitors today made me think of that line.

It was a juried Art Fest, there were probably fees. tents to rent or buy, tables, easels, stands. drive from somewhere (there were out-of-state artists) the cost and labor to exhbit at one of these festivals....and yet - why is it that so many of the artists sit back as though their art would just sell itself.

Sure, we've all had those moments - we paint (create) something and post it somewhere, our website, a gallery - and a buyer will be so moved that it is sold immediately - no selling necessary the artwork sold itself...it does happen. But for most of us I think we need to put a little more in to the selling part of our business. It IS a business after all.

One artist had beautiful paintings and I walked into her tent to take a closer look. each tag by the painting had a title, size and price...No where in the tent was there an explanation of any sort. Was it oil? Acrylic? Did the price include frame? And the artist was no where in site. Well she was sitting off to one side... Maybe that big post-it note on my forehead was saying - "don't talk to me because I'm just browsing".

An opportunity lost...what if I was a buyer?

Hank - A White Schnauzer Pet Portrait

As I mentioned in the last post for Oliver the Black Standard poodle - black is a hard color to paint when it comes to dogs. But I have to change my thoughts on that as now I'm of the opinion that white is really really really hard :) Add too much browns and grays and the dog looks either dirty or dull. And yet I needed to add subtle shading to contour the face.

Hank is an unshaved Schnauzer whose ears have not been cropped. He is a happy boy who has dancing dark eyes that are covered in most of his photos. The owner of Hank sent a lot of photos but in most of them he looked like a cotton ball. I was tempted to do a mixed media - glue a few cotton balls on the canvas and call it a day... :) But I persevered and finished this painting. It's actually a second re-paint. His owner was happy with the photo I've emailed to her. This painting is in the mail and on it's way to it's home in Southwestern Georgia.

Pet Portraits

I love doing these "face" pet portraits. This black standard poodle is Oliver. It's hard to paint black and yet if you look closely - there are so many colors within black. I added a little punch of red on the nose and some touches of blue around the eyes. This was fun - I'll soon post a white dog that I painted. White is definitely a lot tougher to paint!!

Moody colors. I was thinking that if I had to paint scent - it would be just whipers of perfume and soft moody like this....I love perfume! I love perfume like crazy! I hope you're not too allergic to it because I love perfume..... :) But the two all time favorite perfume of mine have become discontinued!!! One I've loved since high school - Christian Dior's Diorella....and the other Fendi....it used to be so common one could buy it at a discount clothing store for practically nothing and now - they sell it for nearly $300 on Ebay, sellers who have found bottles of it from some old inventory or used bottles.....I love Fendi because it matches my body chemistry and when I wear it I get the most compliments! Oh dear Fendi - please bring back this classic perfume of yours!!! Please please!!!

I love painting flags - the colors really work well and with the palette knife - the texture seems to make the flag really look like they are billowing. I painted another and will post tomorrow. I took the first line of the Star Spangled Banner song and the last words for the titles.

Limoncello - Palette Knife Painting - Amalfi Lemons

1. Our 7-day trial (takes all the risk away from the buyer!)
2. We are a living site that posts new work by real artists every week (encourages buyers to come back).
3. Finally, she keeps her response focused. We've found that if a client is already interested in a specific piece, offering them up other work to consider on Ugallery or your personal site can overwhelm them with choice. Focus on selling the piece they are already interested in.

A little on this painting above - Limoncello - the very strong alcoholic drink made from lemons. Along the Amalfi Coast of Italy - there are lemon growers along the cliffs - known for their lemons and this strong liquor. Purple Mist, Purple Irises, Palette Knife Painting

Every now and then a flop turns out alright - like it was meant to be. This painting is just that. I'd painted a very thick iris painting - and yet - here and there there are bits of the lemony yellow undertoning showing through, especially in the top right hand. I wanted it that way. But the flowers and leaves I just could get the colors right. It was turning much too dark for a light sky. So I started to scrape. The colors that remained on the canvas was starting to look right so I loaded up the palette and started over, however on several places I liked the way the streaks looked from the initial scraping so I laid down color and then used a rag to drag the paint.

Though textured the effect of the dragging the paint makes this look like a watercolor and the colors remained soft.

Day in and day out, so many little things happen. We feel up and high and then we fall to the ground.

My mother had a heart attack at the beginning of last week. As some of you know, I'm half Japanese and my mother is the Japanese half. She lives a world away. I can't just drop everything to be with her though I'd love to and when I do go there during times like this, I'm more in the way as it is not where I've been all these years. I'm a foreigner in a foreign land. Even though I still speak the language, when I am there, under circumstances like this I can only lend my presence there. I don't know where my parents keep the salt, I've been out of their home for too long.

I hate being so far away from my family.

She's fine now. I just got off the phone and she sounded like her usual self. She took my niece shopping yesterday, she said. She's watching her favorite T.V. shows and she's cleaning house...

Hope of a Lasting Friendship - Floral Palette Knife Painting

I had lunch with a fellow artist, Elsie Porter. It is so good to visit with other artists and talk about ummmm....ART! And we are both women with a past (of course!) so it is nice to connect with someone to talk about life, home, men, diet and exercise, religion, clothes - I think our conversation touched on almost every topic...We met a year ago when she gave a workshop of Marketing Art. My favorite topic and something I look forward to learning and implementing!

I'd already painted this and was stumbling around for a title...when after our lunch Elsie and I'd exchanged emails on how much we enjoyed each other's company and she had written a sentence, " Just wanted to say thanks for a great time and the hope of a lasting friendship."

Two vases of flowers in this painting - what a perfect title! And it is so wonderful to meet and make new friends no matter where we are in life. I am so blessed and happy to have made a new friend.

Soul Mates - Angel with Dog Palette Knife Painting

Earlier this year I painted this and asked my friends what I should name this painting. Made a contest of it.

I did have a winner and chose "Unconditional Love".

From that painting I received a commission - paint the same painting but with a dog of a different color because the collector's sister owns an elderly border collie and she wanted to have something to give her sister when the "time" came. She sent me a photo of her sister's border collie, Fly. That was this Spring and I wondered....

I received an email from her the other day that Fly has crossed the rainbow bridge and she gave her this painting to let her know that Fly will be alright. The painting is called "Soul Mates" titled by my collector. I really think all dogs go to heaven and I know they watch over us...I have a few dog angels looking out for me, I feel their presence and their protection.....

Selling Art - Finding Collectors

My friend, Hellenne who's also an artist, and I visited a studio complex at which some of the local artists rent space. Maybe because it is Summer and yesterday was a Friday, only a few of the Studio/Galleries were open. Some of the artwork were just divine! It was nice visiting with the artists, taking a peek at their studio, the paints they used, the easels they had their paintings setting, the brushes, the panels, the canvases, their artwork and talking about their work.

But one thing that I think all of the artists missed was that they did not "sell". And I'm wondering why hadn't they? Did we tell them too soon upon entering their studio/gallery spaces that we were artists? And why should that stop them from trying to sell to us?

Most all of the artists had a guest sign-in book somewhere near their doors and a stack of business cards or other handouts but not one of them said, "please sign my guest book and take a card". What a missed opportunity!! Did they think that artists don't buy other artists' work?

So I ask you, since most of you reading my blog are artists - do you buy other artists' work?

Another question. If you had a studio/gallery space or had a tent at a fair and a browser stops by, do you make it a point to ask them to sign your guest book and try to get their contact info? Would you discriminate against artists?

I think I'm trying to make two points here as I type this out.

Something I learned while selling Real Estate - don't just hand out your business card - make it a point to get theirs or their contact info because they won't be contacting you when they're ready to buy or sell a home, you have to consistently contact them so that when they're ready to buy or sell, your name will be in their thoughts and in their Rolodex (sorry, old word - should have used contact list - but you get the point).

Same with art selling. The moment that browser walks out the door or your tent, they are gone. Unless you get their contact info.

Well I've written long enough, so I'll get to my second point in my next post.

For the painting above, I wanted a somber look so I mixed UltraMarine with Burnt Sienna to make a dark dark. For the blossoms I used UltraMarine and Magenta. (of course white too)...."Turn the light out" for a floral painting that seems to glow in the dark.

I have a thought I'd like to voice my pet peeve. I own two blogs - The Daily Painters of Georgia and the Palette Knife Painters and I volunteer as the Membership chair of the Artists of Texas/Daily Painters of Texas blog and website. So I get a lot of emails from artists who want to join one of the groups.

There's many reasons why an artist would want to join a site. I know why I want to. I want to get more exposure so that I can sell more paintings. Simple.

I guess I suppose that I assume artists who apply to join the group are professionals....well, actually most are. Most often have some web pressence and that's probably how they found "us".

So here's my suggestion and pet peeve - get your own email address.

I understand that some artists are new and just starting their "careers" and have not gotten their domain name and address. (That would be my next advice and suggestion - get your own domain.)

(But before the domain) Get your own email address address AND make sure that the name that shows up on the senders is yours..... Even if you use Hotmail/gmail or yahoo - Don't use your spouse's or a family/group/etc....please. If you are Jane Doe and the email shows a message from John Doe or Doe Family - I don't know who I'm responding to or whether "jane" is reading my emails....Clients won't know either and it looks too unprofessional.

While visiting Japan, I noticed more of the pink, rich pink hydrangeas in the flower stores. I've heard that the blues, purples and pinks have to do with the acidity and alkalinity of the soil the plants are grown it. In Japan, I've heard people say that the rains make the flowers more blue.

I wanted to paint these with a warm aqua/turquoise blue background with lots of movement. The flowers are almost abstract with all the thick paint that I've used. This painting will take a little while to dry since it is so thick.

A few days ago I took my car into my dealer's service department to get routine maintenance done....and they give the car a complimentary car wash. Oh my car loved it! It looked so nice and shiny and happy...but not two days later it's sporting a yellow-green haze on it.

It sure is Spring and the pollen is in the air. Thankfully I'm not prone to allergies so the pollen doesn't bother me except to have coated my car. The good thing is, that everywhere I look everyone else's car is suffering the same predicament and has a sheen of yellow green. But my, the trees are filling in with that sweet, fresh looking green and the farmer's markets are so colorful with flowers waiting to be planted in gardens.

Pinkie and the Killers, Tulip Palette Knife Painting

Odd title for a painting? There was a singing group in Japan in the '70's called Pinky and the Killer - at least I think Pinky was spelled with a "y"....Female lead singer with 4 men backup - kind of like Gladys Knight and the Pips. They often dress in tux's and a Top Hat with canes.....I might have been reminiscing because of all the news from Japan.

When I posted this painting on FB, several alumni from my high school in Japan commented that they remembered the group and liked the title.

Well it's officially Spring now and tulips just feel so Spring. Although I don't know if I can name just one flower to that honor....blooming trees, daffodils, hyacinths, all feel like Spring.

I was looking at my recent inventory of paintings and was thinking, "I sure have painted a few angel paintings lately". I have been posting them on Facebook and it has been a pleasant surprise to receive comments and thumbs up on the paintings. I think Facebook has it's place in seeing what is getting people's attention and what hasn't.

Yesterday I met Isabelle Gautier, a Georgia Artist who blogs on the Daily Painters of Georgia site. We'd only "met" virtually through emails so it was nice to put a face to a name. We visited a few Galleries and then had lunch at a French restaurant. Isabelle is from the Normandy area of France so it was nice going to a French restaurant, ordering wine for lunch. We talked about our art, ideas on galleries, what venues work for selling art, etc. It was nice brainstorming and making a new friend.

Long ago I heard a song by Kathy Mattea about a couple who'd been married for years and years - she wrote the song from something she heard her grandmother who had Alzheimer's had said and she had witnessed. Her grandmother was in an assisted living, she'd been withdrawn and not speaking until they wheeled her grandfather into her room and she said "Where've you been? I've looked for you for ever and a day".

I wonder sometimes at how happy our pets seem when we leave them alone at the house for a few minutes/hours/days? They seems so terribly happy to see us. Almost as though they ask us where you've been? I've looked for you for ever and a day!

Ok, I do have a soft spot for dogs.....!

So it started with a pair of feet sticking out of the bed sort of painting and when they started to announce school, businesses, and office closings, this little idea popped into my head....what if you had found yourself stuck in you house but didn't have anyone over that would have shared the snuggly moments in the morning, you'd be saying "Darn!"

White Hydrangea with Purple Palette Knife Painting

We'd been cabin-fevered for 4 days...Inspsired by the snow, this was another painting of the white hydrangea I posted yesterday, this time with a light blue background.

I went over to the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas where I display some of my paintings, to take new paintings. Thankfully one of my paintings sold last week and another one is on lay-away. The drive to the gallery takes about 50 minutes give or take, sometimes a lot of give because of the traffic in North Dallas but yesterday was the first day that the temperatures were above freezing in what newscasters said over 100 hours. The sun was out and the snow and ice was quickly melting on the roads. A lot of the "stuff" on the road was slush, muddy mix of sand and the salt solution the highway crews have been putting on the raods.

My poor car looks like it'd been in a off-road rally, it is soooo muddy.

This is from a photo I took of my dog, Stella. I wanted to practice painting her because I might add it to a painting I have in mind. Stella loves to go for walks even if it's to nowhere in particular. She senses that it might be a walk if I put on either my tennis shoes or my gardening shoes.

And as I go outside, she'll usually walk a few steps ahead of me though she has no idea where I might be going. I like indulging and walk a bit even if I' wasn't planning on taking a walk just to make her happy. She has a "happy" walk, almost a skip sort of walk when she's walking with me. And when I took this photo she didn't even know I was capturing her to use as a model some day in one of my paintings.

I've been painting angels and angels and angels it seems and this one was going to be a study for another "couple angel". I had it sketched with my brown pencil but I didn't quite like it....it sat around in my stack of 6 x 6 boards waiting it's fate.

So this afternoon as I was looking for another board to tone to get ready for more painting I grabbed this board and was going to wipe the pencil sketch off with some turpentine when I realized that the posture of the two was rather nice. I outlined it with some brown paint and then the next bit was to put down red for the dress - suddenly it came alive. I didn't want to mess with it and lose that "feeling"....because it was when I painted the red the word "Ardent" popped in my head.

This painting came together so quickly and I'm really pleased with it...I hope you will feel the same way too.

It's long. But it was the inspiration from which this painting started and it just seemed too fun to not write it all down as a title....why not...

This is a painting of an angel, hugging and holding a person in yellow chemise. It just felt right.

My Fav Tool!!

A few years ago I found this really cool screwdriver at our local garden center. If you know me and ever are with me when I need to use this baby, you will here me tell you that this is my favorite! I just love looking at this beautiful tool and yeah, it's handy.

This is one of the types of screwdrivers that you can change from plus to minus......ok, guys I'm sorry that isn't the terminology - Phillips and Johnson...for that matter I used to not know which way to turn in order to tighten or loosen until I was watching a "Sewing with Nancy" TV show on PBS when she mentioned "Lefty Lucy (loose-y), Righty Tidy (tighty)....so, now I'm a pro at using a screwdriver! YAY!

And then.....

I was shopping at the Montgomery Street Antique Mall in Fort Worth and stumbled upon beautiful floral designed tool. There were hammers, tape measures and voila a paper cutter. This particular paper cutter has a very similar design as my screwdriver, at least the colors are very close so I had to buy it to match my beautiful screwdriver.

Another from my series on Angels. this started as an angel holding an umbrella but I was not really happy with it. So actually this is a re-do - repaint - fixed up - painting. I still wanted the angel to hold an umbrella - maybe I got that idea from an insurance ad, nonethelsss,

I think angels do look out for us......so here is one holding out an umbrella to protect us from the storms. I changed the postion of her arms and her body and changed the color to a more soothing softer shade using the same pallete as the painting I'd done earlier called Angel Thoughts.

The arm positoning was a suggestion from my painting buddy, Barbara whom I paint with nearly every week. It's good having a painting buddy to paint and talk art with. In a sense, she's my painting angel. So if you haven't got one, do find someone to paint with. It "makes" you paint - which is a good thing.

Pet Portait Commission for Christmas

I was blessed by having a few commissions this Christmas season. Since I paint in oils, the dry time is a real concern, in order to get the paintings done in time to put in the mail. I found a product that really help speed the drying of the oil paints. My friend and fellow artist Nancy Medina got me started with the Archival Mediums and after some experiementations I am in love with the Smooth Gel Medium which comes in a tube. I mix a little of this into the whites, yellows and reds which takes forever to dry. I've notieced the Cerulean is another color that takes long to dry. Another from the Archival line by Chroma is their Fast Drying White Oil Paint. It really does dry a lot faster than most white.

Do you have a favortie medium? Let me know what works for you.

Great Gift Becomes a Classic-----The True story of Rudolph

A man named Bob May, depressed and broken-hearted, stared out his drafty apartment window into the chilling December night. His 4-year-old daughter Barbara sat on his lap quietly sobbing. Bob's wife, Evelyn, was dying of cancer. Little Barbara couldn't understand why her mommy could never come home. Barbara looked up into her dad's eyes and asked, "Why isn't Mommy just like everybody else's Mommy?"

Bob's jaw tightened and his eyes welled with tears. Her question brought waves of grief, but also of anger. It had been the story of Bob's life. Life always had to be different for Bob. Small when he was a kid, Bob was often bullied by other boys. He was too little at the time to compete in sports. He was often called names he'd rather not remember. From childhood, Bob was different and never seemed to fit in.

Bob did complete college, married his loving wife and was grateful to get his job as a copywriter at Montgomery Ward during the Great Depression. Then he was blessed with his little girl. But it was all short-lived. Evelyn's bout with cancer stripped them of all their savings and now Bob and his daughter were forced to live in a two-room apartment in the Chicago slums. Evelyn died just days before Christmas in 1938.

Bob struggled to give hope to his child, for whom he couldn't even afford to buy a Christmas gift. But if he couldn't buy a gift, he was determined to make one - a storybook! Bob had created an animal character in his own mind and told the animal's story to little Barbara to give her comfort and hope. Again and again Bob told the story, embellishing it more with each telling. Who was the character? What was the story all about? The story Bob May created was his own autobiography in fable form.

The character he created was a misfit outcast like he was. The name of the character? A little reindeer named Rudolph, with a big shiny nose. Bob finished the book just in time to give it to his little girl on Christmas Day.

But the story doesn't end there. The general manager of Montgomery Ward caught wind of the little storybook and offered Bob May a nominal fee to purchase the rights to print the book. Wards went on to print "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and distribute it to children visiting Santa Claus in their stores. By 1946 Wards had printed and distributed more than six million copies of Rudolph. That same year, a major publisher wanted to purchase the rights from Wards to print an updated version of the book.

In an unprecedented gesture of kindness, the CEO of Wards returned all rights back to Bob May. The book became a best seller. Many toy and marketing deals followed and Bob May, now remarried with a growing family, became wealthy from the story he created to comfort his grieving daughter.

But the story doesn't end there either. Bob's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, made a song adaptation to Rudolph. Though the song was turned down by such popular vocalists as Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore , it was recorded by the singing cowboy, Gene Autry. "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was released in 1949 and became a phenomenal success, selling more records than any other Christmas song, with the exception of "White Christmas."

The gift of love that Bob May created for his daughter so long ago kept on returning back to bless him again and again. And Bob May learned the lesson, just like his dear friend Rudolph, that being different isn't so bad. In fact, being different can be a blessing.

I'd painted this subject and in these similar colors earlier this year and it sold. You might have seen me post it here or on my website. But the painting caught the eye of a Photographer friend in Massachusetts so I painted him this one for him. I've painted several like this in different color schemes and probably will paint more. I love grays; love mixing them and seeing the various colors of gray.

I'll be posting another painting, very similar to this in the near future - it is a bit more abstract.

Painting Pet Portraits

A 5 x 5 inch pet portrait commission. I love doing these small portraits of animals. The commissioner for this puppy sent along several photos of her and in everyone there was a reluctance to pose for the camera.

Last week, a photographer friend asked if I'd help her wrangle a Boston Terrier for a calendar photo shoot. It's a lot of work to get dogs to sit and pose for the camera! In this case there were two dogs, which made getting them to both sit still at the same time a challenge. We used little nibbles to entice them to sit and look straight ahead, only they get so interested in the nibbles that as soon as I tried to scoot away from their placement so that I wouldn't be in the shot, the dogs would follow. My friend did manage to get some really good photos so all ended well but I can understand how hard it is to get good photos of animals.

I might be having a senior moment; I think I've posted this painting on my blog a while back. I painted this back in July or so from a idea that someone had given me. I love the color of the muted green I used. Well the painting is still available so I've decided to give Ebay a try - I hadn't been selling there in a long while so it's a test run to see how it works out. A lot of artists had moved away from selling on Ebay because many of the old rules on how to search for something on Ebay had changed. I think the changes hurt individual Artists because big-time sellers got top visibility on searches when a buyer was just browsing. I had an Ebay "store" but the fees were getting complicated.

I started posting my artwork on Etsy as a result.

Well, Ebay has been trying to get people to list on their site by giving several promotions so I've listed this painting at a fairly low start price on Ebay to experiment. I've tried my hand at another small angel painting. I have one very favorite knife to paint with but a palette knife painting at this size requries a smaller one. So I've been using the Langnickle J-3 for these - it still has enough flex and a good sized tip. Still, these smaller paintings are a little difficult to paint loose and not just make it into a huge blurr. Had to use a brush here and there to make sure the colors were where I wanted them to be.

A Realtor friend had remembered that I'd painted several "house angels" in the past. I was a Realtor in my past life, actually so house angels seemed an appropriate subject for me. I had no angels to sell her as they'd all been sold so I painted this little one; the size was her request.

I usually paint my angels a wee bit bigger than this 5 x 5 inch format - but this request got me thinking. Maybe this smaller size might be a nice size as Christmas gifts? What do you think of angel paintings as Christmas gifts?

I'd been painting and working on several commissioned paintings lately. This one, though not a commission I painted from one of many photos my commissioner (don't you like that term? Nancy Medina, my friend and artist came up with it) had sent me. I'm not going to post the actual commissioned painting just yet since it is a surprise gift for my commissioner's spouse.

I had a small panel available so I was doing a little practice painting this little painting. It is now officially Autumn but memories of playing on the beach remain.

Art makes such a wonderful gift. It's lasting and personal.

I just went to see the movie "Eat, Pray, Love". Have you seen it or read the book. I wished there were more scenes of Italy, India and Bali - but since the movie was about the main character maybe that couldn't all be put into the movie.

I love watching a movie for it's scenes as well as for the story. Like "Under the Tuscan Sun" or "Only You", both movies that takes mostly in Italy. The movies gave the viewers a little bit of the views of the beautiful countrysides.

I wanted to play with colors - not a lot of them but just keep it simple and yet...this painting does have color as it has several layers and the bottom layer peeps through here and there. I titled this "It was" because I hope to do several of these that can be displayed in a group...It could be, It will be, It might be...who knows?

The problem with not posting regularly is that one gets even more lazy! So I guess I'll be playing catch-up for a while. This drying right now. I'd started this painting a couple of years ago but handing really gotten the colors right but now that time has passed and looking at it with fresh eyes - the colors came to life...I title this unravel because the center motif looks like a knot that is unraveling and here lately my life felt unraveled...

But it's not all bad...life is good.

I've taken quite a long hiatus. I just painted this painting on Friday while painting with my long time Art friend, Nancy Medina at her house. I think this painting seems appropriate to bring me out of my hiatus. I had moved for a short while to live in Northern Atlanta but I've decided to move back to the Dallas Fort Worth area. It's been a wonderful decision and so goo to be back among friends. I do have friends in GA and I've made some new friends but I've lived in TX for nearly a quarter of a century so it feels more like "home" to me.

O.K. now time to roll up my sleeves and get back to painting again!! Or rather, posting, as I have been painting but had let my blogs lag a little so I'll have to do some catching up.

This red headed angel is in quiet thought. I put a little red off to the side as well - these angel series are a little abstract. Angels are whispy little thoughts perhaps. We don't have to see them clearly, we just need to know they're around.

I think even angels need to rest and I think my angel must be napping. Two weeks ago I twisted my ankle and because I'm the way I am, I did not go to see the doctor until two weeks had passed. My ankle was still warm and swollen and hurt like crazy. The doctor xray-ed my ankle and said nothing was broken but recommended I buy a pair of crutches so I that I don't use my ankle at all for 2 weeks to speed heeling. I bought my crutches and on the second day my shoulder was terribly sore. In fact it hurt so bad I couldn't lift my shoulder. My ankle feels a lot better though...

You know that old remedy for a headache? Drop a hammer on your toe - it immediately makes the headache go away since your toe is in so much pain. I think the shoulder pain has made my ankle feel better.

At any rate - a part of my angel series. This particular "pose" was suggested by a collector who asked if I'd do a sleeping angel as a gift for her mother's caretaker. A sleeping angel is a great gift for a caretaker or therapist or doctors - for who takes care of our ills when our angels are napping and not looking over us?

Look What I Found!!

Look at this neat gadget.

I found this on Karen Rike's Blog called the "Carol Marine Panel Holder".

When I saw this a few months ago, I knew I had to have one!

I usually paint my small panels like the Ampersand Gesso boards or the Raymar Panels flat on the table with a sheet of paper or wax paper under it so that I don't paint the table.

This fantastic panel holder uses "friction" to hold a 5x5, 6x6 and 6x8 panel firmly giving you the ability to clamp onto an easel which I have done for this photo or paint on flat on the table. When I paint on panels I get so much paint on my fingers as I try to move around edges - keeping the panels on this holder allows you to pick you your painting and move it around, carry your painting, set it aside to dry all without having to touch the painted edges.
