Although the box and movie "Fifty Shades of Gray" is abuzz right now, I wasn't thinking of it when I painted this series.  I was thinking of a color for the background - I didn't want to put in details - and in the process mixed Burnt Umber, Cerulean and White together and it came up with ta very warm gray which I've used here.  I think works well against the skin color and white shirt.

What do you Savor?

In our busy run-around-like-a-chicken-with-it's-head-cutoff days, do you take time to enjoy something? Anything? Like birds chirping outside your window? Watching a puffy cloud move along the blue skies? Catching your favorite song on the radio as you start up the engine of your car?

Well yesterday I was driving along a major road when I noticed a little traffic congestion. As I pulled up I saw what was happening. A family of geese were crossing the road on foot. Cars on four lanes of the major roadway were all stopped to let the geese cross. No one got impatient. There were 6 or 7 adult geese, a number of young adolescents and 4 or 5 baby geese. The babies would not have been able to fly. It was interesting to watch a couple of the adults up front, a couple along the sides with the "teenagers" and a couple adults bringing up the rear. The babies did not walk in a straight line, but the adults kept them moving across the road.

It made me smile.

I was glad to have witnessed that procession. I savored the moment.

Oh, dear, dear - my blog disappeared. I posted yesterday but wasn't paying attention perhaps when I walked away from my computer. So, this morning when I sat at the computer the blog post was not on the blog...hmmmm -

This is the third of the gray paintings. I liked doing these so much that I painted a couple of more in a similar style and will be posting those in the next upcoming posts, as soon as they are a little drier and I can handle them enough to take photos of them.

Gray Day - Palette Knife Oil Painting, Female figurative

"She"

I like mixing paints to make grays. I actually like it. My favorite mixture is burnt sienna, cerulean and titanium white - which I've used for the background color. The dress was french ultramarine blue, burnt sienna and titanium white.

I had a good painting evening yesterday, listening to my mp3 player playing soundtrack music from the movie "Notting Hill". I especially like the song "She". (I have been thinking to use that as a title one of these days.) Anyways, it was a productive evening and I painted 3 female figuratives which I will be posting here in the coming days. All of them use the grays I mentioned.

It was a gray day.

"What to Wear"

The last painting I did "With Me" was on a gessoed hardboard and this one is on a Raymar board which has the canvas texture. I think I like the smoother gessoed board for paintbrush painting when I'm doing these smaller paintings, but I love these raymar board for when I'm painting with the palette knife. It just seems to have the "grab" that a smooth gessoed hardboard doesn't.
