For You Irises

"Irises for You"

Instead of the usual vase of flowers, I had a pair of hands holding the flowers.  I wanted to use this idea on a very large canvas - perhaps 40 x 30 inches but wanted to give it a try first in the smaller size format.  Do the hands work?

Purple Mist, Purple Irises, Palette Knife Painting

"Purple Mist"

Every now and then a flop turns out alright - like it was meant to be.  This painting is just that.  I'd painted a very thick iris painting - and yet - here and there there are bits of the lemony yellow undertoning showing through, especially in the top right hand.  I wanted it that way.  But the flowers and leaves I just could get the colors right.  It was turning much too dark for a light sky.  So I started to scrape.  The colors that remained on the canvas was starting to look right so I loaded up the palette and started over, however on several places I liked the way the streaks looked from the initial scraping so I laid down color and then used a rag to drag the paint.  

Though textured the effect of the dragging the paint makes this look like a watercolor and the colors remained soft.

White Iris - Palette Knife Painting

In the house I lived in till about 2 years ago - my goodness how time flies - had a garden that included white irises in the Spring.  One day if I ever get back to gardening, I think I'd like to plant bunches of iris because I never tire of seeing them.

I've not blogged in a while, traveling takes it out of me.  My schedules and routines are disrupted.  My sleep definitely does.  Although I have been painting, it's the posting that's taking a little bit of a push to get back up to speed.  Bear with me please.

My friend, Sandy was visiting last week and from her seat she can look into my painting room where this painting was sitting on an easel. She wanted to look at it closer so she walked into the room and then walked back to her seat and looked at it...and she said, how interesting that from here I can tell that you've painted irises but when you go close to it you see colors and don't really see the irises. And in Monet's way of saying, it's my "impression" of irises...

Serene Chaos - a painting of irises

I'm giving my paintbrushes a break and picked up the palette knife to paint. I know the title of this painting is a little bit of any oxymoron like "jumbo shrimp" but sometimes a word gets stuck in one's mind and the word for me has been "chaos". It's almost like a song that you hear over and over in your mind and can't get rid of until you try ever so hard to sing another song...

I'm looking at my desk - it's a chaos...I think I'll need to do some filing to get my mind off this word. But until I find another word to obsess about, this painting of a profusion of irises is titled:

Quiet Dance - A Painting of More Irises

I liked painting the smaller paintings of Irises so much that I had to do a larger version of it again with the palette knife. The irises seemed to be dancing in a gentle twilight breeze. I also found the title of this painting from a title of a song I heard on Hiroshi Yamaoka's Soundclick page.

Escape - A Painting of Irises

Have you ever felt like running away? Where would you go? I love painting because it allows me to "escape"...I painted another Van Gogh-esque Iris painting. Perhaps he wanted to get away from it all...that is why I named this one:

Irises at Twilight

Painted this during our "kinda weekly painting night". It's good to get together with friends to catch up on what everyone's been up to, drink a little wine, nibble on crackers, get inspired, ask each other to critique and make suggestions and get a little paint on the canvas.

Our local museum, The Kimball in Fort Worth is wrapping up their exhibit of the Impressionists. Van Gogh is my favorite impressionist artist, so with that inspiration in mind -

Secret Garden or My Painting of a Fountain

This is the painting that came from painting in my garden a couple of weeks ago. It's a small 8x10 inches oil on stretched canvas painting of a fountain. Although I've signed it, I think I am going to work on this one a little more. I've been away from painting for a couple of weeks. When I walked into my studio this morning I was anxious to post this on my blog but as I was preparing it, I see "things" that still need work.

I missed painting.....

Painting Outdoors

Nancy came over on Saturday to paint in my garden. Here she is, a little camera-shy, setting up in front of the irises.

I love my Easyl easel but have not used it much. We wanted to do a practice set-up as we'll be going to the Dallas Arboretum for their May Flowers Paint-Out next month.
