Scent of Lilacs

I was experimenting with a new medium "Medium 5" (butter) by Lukas - it was new to me - it may have been around for awhile. It speeded drying. I loved the purples in the iris and couldn't resist painting another purple flower - the Lilac. This painting is so loose and almost abstract that if I'd not told you it was of lilac flowers, would you have known?

Trees, Once More

The trees along the horse trails just outside my property are still bare and the remains of a flood we had two years ago scar the trunks. I have a feeling that when Spring comes there will be fewer trees as some will not come back to life; but Spring will come and in a month or so the fields will be full of wildflowers. The bluebonnets seedlings in my front yard are starting to emerge.

Serene Chaos - a painting of irises

I'm giving my paintbrushes a break and picked up the palette knife to paint. I know the title of this painting is a little bit of any oxymoron like "jumbo shrimp" but sometimes a word gets stuck in one's mind and the word for me has been "chaos". It's almost like a song that you hear over and over in your mind and can't get rid of until you try ever so hard to sing another song...

I'm looking at my desk - it's a chaos...I think I'll need to do some filing to get my mind off this word. But until I find another word to obsess about, this painting of a profusion of irises is titled:

This is a photo of "Max" I found on the Metroport Humane Society's petfinder dog pages. He just looked so sorrowful. I named this painting "Take Me Home". The are too many dogs and cats that are put down every year. A simple solution is to Spay and Neuter your animal. The Metroport Humane Society offers low cost Spay and Neuter Coupons that can be used at participating vets. And if you're in the market for a new pet - please check your local humane society first. You'll be saving a life and getting a wonderful companion - I have two "found" dogs.

Cheryl Cardon of Metroport Humane Society sent along photos of several cats to use as models and this is one of them, "Ally" a silvery, gray cat with beautiful green eyes. She looks like she's planning a revolt...Mice beware!

It is beautiful here in the DFW area - the sun is out but a little nippy, for us (if you're reading this blog and you live in the North - it's balmy) but the weather forecasters said that next week we're to have 80+ degrees! YAY! Though I complain about the heat in Texas in August, I love warmer weather and longer days.

Two-a-Day

Back when I used to pay attention to the Dallas Cowboys, they'd often mention the word "two-a-day" for having football practice twice a day. I painted Tyson for my friend but liked the way it turned out so much that I decided to do another. This one isn't wearing a collar and I took away the heart which was actually a vet tag. As much as the two look alike there are differences in the two paintings. I'll have to name this painting, so if anyone has a good title, please leave me a comment.

Just a reminder. I'll be auctioning off the black and white cat painting starting Saturday 8:00 am to benefit the Metroport Humane Society. Someone asked if "Willie" was adopted by Cheryl as a forever home pet or as a foster pet - Willie is a forever pet. But there are plenty of pets on their website all needing good homes.

It's OK to Dream and it's Free!

Was out walking with my "pointer sisters" (they're the two up front - Stella, the black and white English Pointer?? and Tina, the German Shorthair Pointer) and Mickey - a neighbor's lab, along the horse trails that skirt our property when I spotted that someone had painted this sign on an old tree.


Here's a closer look at it. Someone did a good job - there are a lot of colors in this little "sign". So, is it a sign? "Someone" telling me that is OK to dream?

How often do we seek "signs" to do something? If we only had a "sign"...and so here it is...Dreaming is Free! I've been given a sign...what fun!!

So what is YOUR dream?

White Boxer Pup

I had white on my palette after having painted Ozzy so here's a white dog. "Tyson" is a friend's white boxer pup. I thought a black cat was a tough subject to paint - white is another interesting color. There really isn't any pure white on the whitest parts and the shadows take on so many different colors. I loved painting these two white pets.

My friend Nancy Elstad sent me some quotes by John Singer Sargent. He insisted that his student paint from models and not of their friends because "If you paint your friends, they and you are chiefly concerned about the likeness." This might hold true when painting friend's pets - I try too hard to make the painting look like their cats and dogs when I should be more loose and just try to paint.
