Iris Oil Painting with Palette Knife

"Everything Else is Nothing"
6 x 6 inches, Oil on Board
I do have trouble coming up with interesting titles and sometimes fall back on something like "yellow tulips" "red roses".....just a descriptive title. I have nothing against descriptive titles but I guess I'd like to be able to come up with something charming and creative for my artwork. I once exhibited a painting of aspens which didn't have the word "aspen" in the title. Some viewers thought they were birch and some thought they were aspens - the viewers made up their own minds as to what they were seeing. I like that.
And yet I think a title of a painting plays a role in it's success. I have sold paintings after I've changed the title; is it a coincidence?
Last night I was chatting with a friend who typed this phrase. It was part of a longer sentence but I liked the sound of it...."everything else is nothing". So there you have it.
I am going to ask everyone who reads this blog a favor of doing one of the following. Please
1) Post your thoughts in the comments section
2) Tell a friend about my blog and paintings
3) Please subscribe to this blog
4) Email painting ideas, title ideas and comments to judy@judymackey.com
Thank you!
Cheers and Hugs,
Judy

Wow. that painting is rather dynamic. I love how the purple just pops off the yellow. And the contrast of the red. Beautiful!

As for titles, sometimes I have descriptive titles and other times they are long and involved and part of an inside joke. I might have a title in mind when I begin the painting. And sometimes that title changes. I recently finished a painting that I had been calling Mermaid. But when I finished it I looked at it and thought "Love comes in all shapes and sizes". That's the title that stuck.

That title somehow seems perfect for the painting. I have trouble coming up with titles too. Sometimes just a phrase from a song pops out and becomes seems to stick.

Another beautiful painting...love it!

This really reads as a larger painting. I think you need to do a larger piece like this!

I love the background in this painting; the textures make it awesome.
As for ideas, do you ever draw a still life/interior of what you see in front of you? I was sitting & reading the other day, and spotted a peculiar shadow on a wall that had textures in it. It turned into an interesting sketch that will later be painted on canvas.

Isn't it strange that titles can affect the sale or not of a painting? This is terrific no matter what you call it.

Judy your still life work is great. They have all the elements that make a painting brilliant. Well done.

BEautiful work Judy, I wish the camera could capture the nice fat textures of your paintings. Sometimes I look to poetry for ideas for titles, and titles of books work sometimes, too.
PS - Is Mickey's paw the cute lab boy who comes to visit the girls? I love that painting.
