What to Wear

"What to Wear"
7 x 5 inches, Oil on Raymar Board
The last painting I did "With Me" was on a gessoed hardboard and this one is on a Raymar board which has the canvas texture. I think I like the smoother gessoed board for paintbrush painting when I'm doing these smaller paintings, but I love these raymar board for when I'm painting with the palette knife. It just seems to have the "grab" that a smooth gessoed hardboard doesn't.
What substrate do you like to paint on?

Thank you for commenting on my art. I am not expert at navigating these websites, but finally am getting back to you. I like your brushwork on these figures and the sweet dog portrait.
you asked if I use a pallet knife. I do off and on. Sometimes I begin with the brush and get impatient and pick up a pallet knife. Sometimes I use one or the other. I stretch my own canvas or cut up masonite or a birch panel and glue a piece of canvas to it. nancy

Ah, the PERFECT title for this great painting, Judy. I think this is my favorite nude of yours. Did I say that right? LOL.

Great work Judy. Thank you for adding the thumbnails of my work on your blog. I was having trouble with my blog. But I want to re-install the thumbnails of the blogs that I follow again.

Hi Judy:
I love the artist boards that Dick Blick sells. There is a tiny canvaslike texture to it and it takes the thick paint well. I especially love the 1.5" cradled boards. They give the painting nice dimension. Do you make your own boards?

Hi Ann, I've got to try those Dick Blick boards. No I don't make my own canvas boards but I do cut down the pre-gessoed masonite boards. And I do stretch my own canvas when I'm not feeling too lazy or when I want a particular size.
Nancy - you make me chuckle - favorite nude....heh heh

these 2 figure studies are just great. I know what you mean about the 2 surfaces. I have been working with both and they certainly have their own characteristics.
Nice job.
