Palette Knife Daily Palette Knife Oil Painting by Texas Artist, Judy Mackey of a Woman in a Yellow Dress

"Yellow Satin"
6 x 6 inches, Oil on Board
The snow is all melted, the slush has dried and the roads have a film of dust and chemicals. My car is in terrible need of a good wash. I'm thankful that here in North Texas our winters don't hang around too long - a snow day is a pretty and quiet diversion.
Many of you touch upon this blog are artists. So I ask you - do you give your art away? Is it OK to do? Does it erode your professionalism? Does it cheapen your art?
Let me know what you think - leave me a comment.

Love this luscious lady in yellow.

Yikes! I do give away some of my work. I never thought to consider it may cheapen my art!

I of course give away my art for my charity [Art for Saving Animals Project] and I am giving a couple of paintings to a store owner for them to display and try and drum up business. I also give away paintings for charity auctions and sometimes as gifts.

What circumstances would an artist give away his/her art that would degrade their reputation or art? Maybe I'm too new and need to learn about this.

Gorgeous! Love that great yellow against the magenta background. Terrific palette work!

Oops! Forgot to comment about giving away art. Yes, I do, but only to close friends and family. I am glad that I can give them something unique and personal. Makes me feel good, not degraded in the least.

I have donated my art for auction to charities, etc.
I would love to be able to give art to people who would not otherwise be able to afford original artworks.
IMHO, this does not cheapen your work, but enRICHes your soul.

I really enjoy your blog and I am passing the Sunshine Award on to you for creative and positive blogging. You can go to my blog to collect it... or just be happy knowing it is there. Please don't feel obligated to do anything more with it.

I love this lady and the rich application of the paint.

I have given some of my art away too... to close friends and family. I don't think it takes away from professionalism at all... unless you are so generous you are giving away every other painting! Then people might just bide their time to get a free one! :o)

Love your work, especially the flower/vase post.

I don't believe giving away the occasional painting cheapens your art. It is common practice to donate pieces for charity auctions and artists of the past have always given pieces away. Picasso used to do drawings on the backs of envelopes so that the recepient would have a sample of his work. I have seen them on Antique Roadshow and they are quite pricey.
